What's Happening!

Anti-Idling Campaign to Improve Our School's Air Quality
As part of our SC DHEC Recycling Grant, students participated in an Air Quality Education campaign to promote Anti-Idling of car riders at our school.  Idling is defined as leaving the car running when not in motion for more than 30 seconds.  Drivers are sometimes forced to idle in traffic, but in most situations, idling is not necessary.  We are trying to educate others so that they know how harmful excess exhaust can be to the health of children, the environment, and the car itself.  A Fact Sheet published by SC DHEC offers educational information and dispels many myths we have about idling.  Did you know that idling for just 10 minutes uses the same amount of fuel as driving 5 miles!?

Students made informational posters and passed out the Fact Sheet to parents and drivers as they arrived at our school and waited to pick up their students.  A few days later, we returned and promoted good idling practices by handing out candy to those drivers who turned off their engines, in addition to the Fact Sheet (attached below).  Hope we helped in some way!!  Please take a look at the PICTURES in the W-E Recycles Section.

Now Recycling Ink Cartridges, Toners,

Cell Phones and MORE!

Williston-Elko High School currently recycles paper, aluminum cans and plastic bottles.  We are happy to announce that we've added used ink cartridges and printer toner to our list of recyclable items.  We are working with Advantage Cartridge to collect and recycle used ink cartridges and printer toners that are used in abundance at our schools.  In addition to the printer supplies, this company accepts used cell phones, laptops, and i-pods.  We would be happy to send these items in for you if you have them around the house.  We earn a small amount of money for each item recycled, and will use the money to continue our recycling program.  For a list of acceptable recyclable items: click HERE. Please contact me at the school, 266-3110, for any questions or to find out more about this program and how you can help!  We would be happy to collect items from your business or home!
